Hair Transplant Graft Calculator
How many grafts might you need for your hairline, crown or eyebrows? Use the diagrams below to select the areas you want to restore and see how their size and the graft density affect your estimate.
How to use the graft calculator
- Choose Men, Women or Eyebrows. Each option opens a different area map. Men and Women show the scalp; Eyebrows lets you select the inner brow, arch and tail on either side.
- Select the areas you want to restore. Tap the numbered diagram or tick the matching boxes. You can select several areas. The top, front and side views show the same selection.
- Adjust the size and density. The size fields contain example measurements in square centimetres. Change these if you know the area to be treated, then move the density slider to compare grafts per cm².
- Read your estimate. The graft total updates as you make changes. The separate hair total uses the average hairs per graft you select. Reset clears your selections and restores the example settings.
Your surgeon will measure the treatment area and assess your donor hair before confirming a graft count. The calculator helps you explore the numbers ahead of that consultation.
1. Choose your areas
Tap the diagram or tick an area below.
Select any numbered area. The views stay in sync.

An example average for the hair estimate. Individual scalp grafts can contain 1–4 hairs.
Illustrative estimate only. Your surgeon confirms the area, donor supply and suitability at consultation.
How is the estimate calculated?
The selected area in cm² is multiplied by the density you choose. Each area is rounded to the nearest whole graft and added to the total. The hair estimate multiplies that total by your chosen hairs-per-graft figure.
The diagram uses example area sizes, which you can change in the size fields. It does not measure your scalp, account for existing hair or assess the number of grafts that can safely be taken from your donor area. The numbered regions are selection zones, not Norwood or Ludwig stages.

What is a hair graft?
A graft is a small piece of tissue containing hair follicles. Scalp hair naturally grows in groups, usually containing one to four hairs. This is why a transplant of 2,000 grafts does not necessarily mean 2,000 hairs.
The calculator shows both figures. For example, 1,000 grafts at an average of two hairs per graft gives an estimate of 2,000 hairs. Changing this average changes the hair total; it does not change the number of grafts.
How many grafts will I need?
The area to cover is the starting point. Restoring two small temple areas is a different task from covering the front and crown together. Existing hair, hair thickness, the planned hairline and the number of grafts available from the donor area also affect the treatment plan.
For a simple example, an area of 20 cm² at 35 grafts per cm² gives 700 grafts. Increasing the same area to 30 cm² gives 1,050 grafts. These examples explain the calculation; the appropriate density depends on your assessment.
The numbered diagrams identify areas to select. They do not diagnose a stage of hair loss or measure your head. For more detail about planning coverage, read how many grafts you may need.
What is the hair transplant cost per graft?
The total treatment price depends on the graft count, the procedure and the work involved. Dividing a quote by the number of grafts gives an average cost per graft for that quote. It does not give a fixed rate that can be applied to every transplant.
Our Belfast hair transplant cost page lists the following prices by graft count:
| Number of grafts | Listed price |
|---|---|
| 500 grafts | £1,999 |
| 1,000 grafts | £2,999 |
| 1,500 grafts | £3,499 |
| 2,000 grafts | £3,999 |
| 2,500 grafts | £4,499 |
| 3,000 grafts | £4,999 |
| 4,000 grafts | £5,499 |
| 4,500–5,000 grafts | £7,999 |
These figures are a guide. Your written quote follows an assessment of the area, donor hair and treatment method. The calculator estimates graft numbers; it does not issue a treatment quote.
A higher graft count is only useful when it suits the area being treated and the available donor supply. Larger cases may need treatment in stages. At your free consultation, we can explain the proposed coverage, graft count and overall cost.

Graft calculator questions
Is a graft the same as a hair?
No. A scalp graft can contain more than one hair. The calculator shows grafts and hairs separately, using the average you select.
Can I select more than one area?
Yes. Select several regions on the diagram or in the list. The total updates immediately. Selecting an area again removes it.
Does a higher number mean a better result?
No. Graft placement, existing hair and donor supply all matter. Increasing the slider changes the calculation; it does not show whether that density is appropriate for you.
Can this tell me whether surgery is suitable?
No. The cause of hair loss and the donor area need to be assessed. This applies to men, women and eyebrow restoration. Book a consultation to discuss your options.
